Alcohol and Prophet Muhammad

(Excerpts from "The Wrath of Allah" and "Left Shoe News")

The Qur'an

The Qur'an is arranged into chapters and verses; (4:34) means Sura (chapter) 4, verse 34. The chapters are not in chronological order but with the longest chapters first (except Sura 1). Not knowing this could lead to incorrect conclusions. For example:

(Qur'an 4:42) "O ye believers, come not to prayer when ye are drunken ..."

(Qur'an 5:99) "O believers! Surely wine and games of chance and statues ...are an abomination of Satan's work."

(Qur'an 76:5) "They shall drink a cup of wine tempered with camphor water."

(Qur'an 76:17) "And the righteous will be given a cup of wine mixed with ginger."

(Qur'an 83:25) "Choice sealed wine will be given to them to quaff."

Whereas it looks as if Allah is becoming more liberal towards alcohol, the opposite is true as Sura 83 is the earliest of these chapters and Sura 5 is the latest. In such contradictory cases in the Qur'an, the earlier instruction is abrogated and the later one takes force of Law.

The Prohibition of Alcohol in 620 CE

On the night of the 17th of Rabhy, twelve months before the Hijrah, Gabriel woke the Prophet and led him outside. There was a white beast, half mule and half ass with wings at its sides. Its name was Buraq and he carried the Prophet, accompanied by Gabriel swiftly to the Temple at Jerusalem. (Apparently Muhammad did not know the state of the "Furthest Mosque" (Qur'an 17:1) in 620 CE. According to Caliph Omar in 638 CE, all that was left of the Temple Mount was a "dung heap".) There he prayed with Abraham, Moses, Jesus and other Prophets. Then two cups were brought to him, one milk and one wine. Muhammad drank the milk and left the wine and Gabriel said: " Thy people are likewise guided; wine is prohibited to them." 17

From the "Wrath of Allah"

Saudi Arabia performs approximately two hundred public beheadings a year. These include adulterers and drinkers convicted for the third time. A hundred lashes for drinking alcohol is Shariah, Islamic law, but nowhere did Prophet Muhammad prescribe execution for this. Muslims may only receive the death penalty for adultery, the murder of a Muslim or for deserting Islam.

But I had not read Abu Dawud!

The three reasons for the death penalty for Muslims is a very common statement but Saudi Arabia is correct if Abu Dawud is accepted as Sahih, sound.

Bukhart 5:59:590 The Prophet said in the year of the Conquest (of Meccah) "Allah and His Apostle have made the selling of alcohol unlawful".

Abu Dawud (38:4467) The Prophet said, "If they drink wine, flog them Again if they drink it, flog them. Again if they drink it kill them." But in (38:4469) they received three cautionary floggings before being killed on the fourth occasion

Muslim 622 The sale of wine, carcass, swine and idols is forbidden. Lard is not to be used for coating boats, varnishing hides or for lighting purposes

Muslim 685 For drinking wine the Prophet ordered forty stripes of two lashes.

Bukhari (7:494) Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful.  And (from them), there will be some who will stay near the side of a mountain, and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and Allah will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."

"Some Islamic History" --The Mahdi of Sudan

The puritanism of the Mahdi was accepted by his followers: he forbade songs and dances, fine clothes, gold and silver ornaments. The veil was imposed on the tribeswomen even though they might otherwise be quite naked. A savage justice punished murderers and adulterers by the axe. Adulteresses were stoned to death. For a small theft the criminal lost a hand and a foot. Eighty lashes were dealt out for drinking beer and a hundred for smoking.

Article 341of the Constitution of Mauritania

"Every adult Muslim who voluntarily and consciously consumes alcohol will be punished by forty strokes"

Aurangzeb of India

The survivor became Emperor in June 1659 and he declared himself Caliph of the whole Muslim world. He tightened up on the observance of Qur'anic law. In every city was appointed a censor of public morals, the Muhtasib to enforce the Shariah. Drinking, gambling and illicit sex relations were made punishable crimes.

The Zia period in Pakistan

Bhutto's dentist, Dr. Niazi, was not a member of any political party but was punished for his friendship with the ex-PM. An American visitor had left half a bottle of wine at his house. This was found when his home was searched. Dr. Niazi was jailed for six months for possessing alcohol

13/11/98 Shariah Imposed in Afghanistan

Radio Shariat says that Taleban religious police are enforcing their brand of Islamic law, particularly in recently captured territory. Most forms of light entertainment such as music, videos, chess, gambling, and alcohol are banned, men must grow beards and women must be covered from head to toe not even showing their faces.

30/11/99 Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan has come out against human rights violations by the Taleban and opium growing in their areas (for financial reasons. It is ironic on the other hand that alcohol is strictly banned) He criticized its neighbors for supporting the Taleban militarily, in particular the religious schools in Pakistan which provide new recruits.

From "Muslim Spain and Islamic Science"

Another great Muslim thinker was Ibn Sina (Avicenna, 980-1037). He had a profound knowledge of many subjects, he had memorized the Qur'an at the age of ten and was a doctor at seventeen. His great work on medicine, "Al-Qanum" remained the textbook for many centuries. But he was an independent spirit: if he thought a glass of wine would prove to be a pick-me-up he would have one regardless of what was written in the Qur'an. On several occasions he had his books banned and had to flee persecution. A contemporary Islamic fundamentalist, Imam Al-Ghazzali (12) called him an infidel and even today fundamentalists attack him. Witness this quote from the Saudi- financed "Islamic World Review"

"The story of famous Muslim scientists of the Middle Ages such as Al Kindi, AI-Farabi, Ibn-al-Haytham and Ibn Sina shows that, aside from being Muslims, there seems to have been nothing Islamic about them or their achievements. On the contrary, their lives were distinctly unIslamic. Their achievements in medicine, chemistry, physics, mathematics and philosophy were a natural and logical extension of Greek thought." 13

From "The Two Faces of Islam"

Islam divides the whole of humanity into two parties, the Hizbe Allah (Muslims) and the Hizbul Satan (non-Muslims). The former should feel a hatred, a revulsion, an abhorrence of everything un-Islamic. To quote the Ayatollah Khomeini again, "Eleven things are unclean: urine, excrement, sperm, blood, a dog, a pig, bones, a non-Muslim man and woman, wine, beer, and the perspiration of a camel that eats filth." 16

Punishment in Hell

Hadee's-e-Qudsi 19:5 (Ahmad) The Prophet said that Allah commanded him to destroy all the musical instruments, idols, crosses and all the trappings of ignorance. Allah said that if a man took even a mouthful of wine, He would make him drink the same quantity of pus of the wounds of the people in Hell.
